Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006

Portugal chose its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 in a national final organised by RTP on 10 March. Of the ten songs, Nonstop triumphed with the song ''Coisas de nada'' (''Meaningless things''). The eventual result was actually a tie, between Nonstop and Vânia Olveira. The jury decided the outcome when a tie took place between these two songs, and as they had awarded more points to Nonstop, they were given the victory. The song was written and composed by José Manuel Afonso & Elvis Veiguinha.
As Portugal did not advance to the final of the Eurovision the previous year, it had to compete in the semifinal again in 2006. The Portuguese entry was not very popular with the televoters, coming 19th out of 23 entries.
Nonstop were formed as a result of the TV show 'POPSTARS'. The group consisted of Andrea, Katia, Fatima, Liliana and Rita. Together they released their first album and had huge success with their first single ''Ao Limite Eu Vou'' and their second single ''Basta Um Sorriso''. One of the members, Fatima, decided to leave the group after they began singing songs in English to appeal to a boader audience. In 2004 they released their second album, which contained the singles ''E Tudo Vai Mudar'' and ''Play-back'', a cover of a Portuguese hit from the eighties.
